WHY CAN ELECTRICITY BE TRANSMITTED HUNDREDS OR THOUSANDS OF KILOMETERS?
WHY CAN ELECTRICITY BE TRANSMITTED HUNDREDS OR THOUSANDS OF KILOMETERS?
Power sources are often located far from places of consumption: hydroelectric power in mountainous regions, wind power in high-wind potential areas, and solar power in regions with high solar radiation; meanwhile, load centers are concentrated in urban areas and industrial zones.
To deliver a specific electrical power over long distances, the power industry must solve the challenge of electric current and power losses on transmission lines.
In principle, transmitted power depends on voltage and current. For a given power capacity, as voltage increases, the current decreases. Meanwhile, power loss on conductors is proportional to the square of the current: $P = I^{2}R$.
This means that if the current is reduced by 10 times, the heat loss on the same transmission line can be reduced by about 100 times, assuming other conditions remain constant.
Transformers provide the core technical solution to this problem:
✅ At the power plant, step-up transformers raise the voltage to the transmission level to reduce current and losses.
✅ At intermediate substations, the voltage is converted through various levels matching the power grid structure.
✅ Near the consumption site, distribution transformers lower the voltage to levels suitable for loads.
Thanks to the step-up – transmission – step-down process, electrical energy can travel great distances much more efficiently, allowing power sources to be built in locations with suitable natural and economic conditions.
Of course, long-distance power transmission also depends on voltage levels, grid structure, line transmission capacity, system stability conditions, and control technology. However, transformers are an indispensable link connecting all voltage levels throughout the entire process.
Within this chain, THIBIDI distribution transformers handle the final stage of delivering electricity from the distribution grid to places of use, meeting requirements for safety, stability, and efficiency.
